Nicaraguans celebrate Holy Week despite public ban

Thousands of Nicaraguan Catholics celebrated Holy Week on Friday inside the grounds of temples and parishes across the country following a governmental ban on public processions. In Managua, Cardinal Leopoldo Brenesand hundreds of devotees reenacted the Way of the Cross gathered in the patios of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

In past years, the celebration gathered thousands of devotees and pledgers in procession through the streets of the capital.CardinalBrenes said that the processions had to take place around or inside temples but minimized the impact of the police ban noting that despite it.The Daniel Ortega administration began restricting religious activities last year, following an increase in tensions with the Catholic Church.
