A new transport ship has been launched by Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF) to carry equipment and personnel to remote islands during emergencies.

A ceremony was held at a shipyard in Onomichi City on Tuesday. The vessel is about 80 meters long and can carry around a dozen vehicles. It is capable of docking at shallow ports in remote islands and making beach landings.

The Defense Ministry plans to establish a new SDF shipping unit next March. The Defense Ministry said the arrangement will enable quick transportation to the Nansei Islands and lead to a stronger defense posture. The remote region in southwestern Japan is dotted with islands, both small and large.
