Hundreds of migrants from Central and South America walked along a major highway on Friday towards Mexico City. The caravan started their journey in Tapachula, in the state of Chiapas, weeks earlier.

Some of the migrants were seen pushing children on strollers as they traversed the Mexico-Puebla highway. Footage showed police vehicles and empty buses travelling near the migrants. As a result of the caravans travelling through Mexico, the country has started granting one-year humanitarian visas to migrants.

The scheme is part of an overhaul of how Mexico is handling migrants at its southern borders. Under the policy of former US President Donald Trump, migrants seeking to enter the US will again have to stay in Mexico as they await immigration hearings.
