Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday his first visit since he took office and an opportunity to inspect the site firsthand. Kishida also visited Iwate and Miyagi Prefecture, both heavily affected by the tsunami 10 years ago.

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated large swaths of Japan's northern coast and triggered a meltdown at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima. The disaster left more than 18,000 people dead and destroyed many houses and businesses.
