People in Nepal gathered on Friday to mark 10 years since a deadly earthquake struck the central part of country. The magnitude 7.8 quake on April 25, 2015, left an estimated 9,000 people dead. The jolt damaged about 900,000 buildings, accounting for 20 percent of all structures in the country.

A memorial ceremony organized by the government took place on Friday near the capital Kathmandu. About 3,000 people, including military personnel and police officers involved in rescue operations, and bereaved families, observed a minute of silence. Participants laid flowers and offered prayers.
