Among the debris washed up on the Jeju shore, 20 kilograms of narcotic ketamine were found, enough to dose 660,000 people simultaneously.
After being alerted, the Coast Guard requested the National Forensic Service for an analysis and found the substance to be ketamine. Used as a medical anesthetic, ketamine has also been categorized as a new type of drug because it causes hallucination.
Some 20 kilograms of the substance was found inside the bag. It’s enough to provide some 660-thousand doses, with the street value estimated at around six billion won, or 4.2 million dollars. The Coast Guard conducted an emergency search of nearby coastlines but no additional finds were made. Officials are looking into how the drug reached the shore to determine whether it washed in from the far seas or if someone intentionally put it there.
