Myanmar-Netherlands: 6th Joint Steering Committee Meeting Held In Nay Pyi Taw

Myanmar-Netherlands 6th Joint Steering Committee Meeting took place in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

At the meeting, deputy minister for Transportation and Communications U Kyaw Myo delivered an opening remark.

Also present at the meeting were the acting director general of the directorate of water resources and improvement of river systems, members of Joint Steering Committee, Netherlands’ special envoy on water, Netherlands Ambassador to Myanmar and responsible officials.

At the meeting, the projects of bilateral cooperation during 2019-2020 fiscal year, survey works, capacity building training and the programs to be collaborated in the future were discussed.

Deputy Director, Directorate of WRIRS, Kyaw Zin Than said “Myanmar and Netherland signed MoU on the cooperation in the comprehensive management for the water resources in May, 2013 in Nay Pyi Taw. After 3 years of collaboration in surveys on the water resources, projects and capacity building measures, the signing MoU has been renewed in 2016. In this joint coordination meeting, the MoU will be signed to extend the agreement.” 

Secretary of advisory board, National Water Resource Committee, Dr. Khin Ni Ni Thein said “They provided the assistances for comprehensive water resource management including research on the subject matters on the water resources, water transportation, river erosion, water supply for farming, protection from the flood disaster. For our country, there are many things left to do such as capacity building of the water resource management related professionals, addressing water resource management from the state level, budget allocation and human resource mobilization, nurturing young generation etc.”

Myanmar and Netherlands host the Joint Steering Committee Meeting in rotation. This is the 6th Joint Steering Committee Meeting and the declaration to extend the MoU until 2022 was signed, it’s learnt.
