Around a dozen mourners dressed in black gathered outside Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok, holding portraits of Thailand’s former Queen Sirikit and weeping in grief.

The Queen Mother, who was the wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and mother of the current King Vajiralongkorn, passed away late Friday at the age of 93, according to a palace announcement. Mourners arrived at the hospital in the early hours, paying respects to the beloved royal who had long been admired for her devotion to public service and welfare work.

The atmosphere was solemn as citizens expressed deep sorrow and remembrance for Queen Sirikit’s lifelong dedication to the Thai people and her enduring role in the Chakri Dynasty.
