MoU Between Myanmar and India: Aiming to enhance socio-economic development between two countries

Myanmar and India signed 3 memoranda of understanding at the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations (MIFER) on November 6th, with the aim to implement the Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) that can bring benefit between the two countries.

MoU involves rural electrification using small-scale solar energy in Kunchankone Township of Yangon Region, water supply using solar power in drought-prone villages in central dry zone of Myanmar and implementation of departmental E-library. MoU for the construction of a multipurpose hall for highland agriculture and MoU for the construction of 1 Bailey bridge and 4 box culvert bridges in Naga Self-Administered Zone are under finalization for further implementation.

India has decided to provide grants for 5 QIPs in 2022-2023 fiscal year and 10 QIPs in coming 2024. For those ministries that want to implement socio-economic projects, project proposals need to be prepared in accordance with set guidelines.

After preparation, proposals are needed to submit to MIFER. Also, Small Scales Development Projects (SDPs) worth a maximum amount of 2 million USD is granted by India. Under the project, 3 batches of proposals were submitted by the various ministries and the first batch includes 5 projects, 10 for the second and 21 for the third.

The Ministries can apply for a Quick Impact Project with a maximum cost of 50,000 USD and for a Small Scales Development Project at a maximum amount of 2 million USD.
