US military ships loaded with construction equipment have left a port in the southern state of Virginia to build a temporary pier that will enable vital humanitarian supplies to be delivered to the Gaza Strip.

A departure ceremony was held at a military port on Tuesday for the vessels that will take part in the construction and operation of the pier. The US Army said about 500 soldiers will take part in the mission and the ships will take up to 30 days to reach their destination, and the temporary pier is expected to start operating in about 60 days.

As Hamas has caused a serious shortage of food and relief supplies, the Army Brigadier General said once the mission becomes fully capable, it will be able to provide over 2 million meals per day to Gaza, and soldiers will be saving lives.
