Millions ring in New Year with China's Spring Festival Gala

5 February 2019

Across China millions tuned in to the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala, the most watched TV show in the country, and counted down to the Year of the Pig on Monday night. The annual gala, known as Chunwan in Chinese, began at 8 p.m. and carried viewers across the country into the new year.

A stunning mix of beautiful and boisterous performances filled the show's main venue in Beijing, as well as three sub-venues in south China's Shenzhen City, northeast China's Changchun City, and east China's Jinggangshan City. Some of the standout performances included a number by minority ethnic signers, an impressive acrobatics show with nimble gymnasts, and a serene water ballet.

The show reached its climax at midnight, when performers and audience members alike erupted in cheers, flanked by massive fireworks displays.
