Millions of dead fish were found washed up in the lower Darling-Baaka river in an Australian outback town on Saturday. The mass fish kills were likely caused by hot weather and low oxygen levels as floods receded in the area.

"This event is ongoing as a heatwave across western New South Wales continues to put further stress on a system that has experienced extreme conditions from wide-scale flooding," the New South Wales state Department of Primary Industries said in a statement. A local resident said the event was difficult to comprehend after dealing with recent floods.
