Migrants were stranded at Peru's southern border with Chile on Monday after the latter country tightened migration controls. The migrants wanted to return to their countries of origin after unsuccessfully entering neighboring Chile.

But on their journey home, Peruvian police officers asked the migrants for documents. Some migrants, who weren't in possession of the required papers or visas, were instead held up at Tacna, where Peru's southern border is located. In February, Chile deployed military personnel to its borders with Peru and Bolivia in an attempt to stem an influx of unauthorized crossings.
