President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday that a subaquatic fireball that appeared to boil the waters of the Gulf of Mexico after a leak in a gas pipeline was the result of an accident and stated that his government will repair all damages. During the conference, López Obrador noted that according to initial reports, the fire that broke out Friday in a submarine gas pipeline belonging to state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) was the result of a "nitrogen gas leak" and hinted that the incident was a result of a stormy rain with electrical discharges. Pemex reported that the gas leak occurred about 150 meters from an oil platform and was controlled in about five hours. There were no injuries or fatalities in the incident.
