Mexico President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Wednesday promises tougher measures to fight extortion during an event with business leaders in the capital Mexico City.

Powerful cartels control swathes of Mexico and are involved not just in drug trafficking but other crimes including people smuggling, extortion and fuel theft. She said that extortion must have a greater sanction, it must be categorized as a serious crime and to be prosecuted even in the absence of an official complaint, because it is always difficult for victims to report it.
