Meteorological Day: World Meteorological Day Observed in Nay Pyi Taw

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and the Ministry of Transport and Communications organized the 59th edition of World Meteorological Day in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday.

World Meteorological Day takes place every year on 23rd of March to commemorate the date of the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization in 1950. Myanmar has celebrated the day since 1960 as a member country of World Meteorological Organization. The theme of this year is “The Sun, The Earth and the Weather”.

Director General of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Kyaw Moe Oo said "Staffs of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology from all states and regions would present their research papers today. We selected the top 10 research papers to be presented. The paper reading session aims for achievement of up-to-date information on weather and climate changes and knowledge sharing to public."

The winners of the article contest held in commemoration of the Day were awarded at the ceremony. The celebration also features the exhibition of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology’s activities and paper reading sessions on research papers in relevance with Meteorological, Hydrological, Seismological and Agro-Meteorological subjects.

Participant, Article Contest, Wai Mar Hla said "I always participate in state level competitions. I found out about the contest through newspaper. I studied books and records of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and learnt about current conditions concerning Meteorology from experts. Meteorology is very important for an agricultural country like Myanmar."

The ceremony was attended by the Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Thu, permanent secretaries, heads of departments, department officials and invited guests.
