California Gov. Gavin Newsom appeared at a Fresno high school Thursday to highlight the efforts of his administration to ramp up mental health support for K-12 schools, students and their families.
Newsom, a Democrat, said the state is developing a suicide prevention program, increasing remote access and expanding treatment slots. He is looking to train or hire 40,000 new mental health workers for the state and provide $20,000 scholarships for counselors who will commit to work in schools for two years. California has a ratio of 572 students per counselor, among the highest in the country in the 2020-21 school year.
