Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin where the two leaders discussed migration. She was greeted for the talks by a guard of honour at a ceremony in the German capital.

Speaking alongside Scholz, Meloni said that her government's position would focus on working with the countries of origin and the transit countries to efficiently stop human trafficking and stop the migration streams before they hit the European borders.

In total, there were 330,000 unauthorised attempts made to enter the EU last year — a six-year record. EU leaders have already said that a full breakthrough on their migration policies wouldn't come before bloc-wide elections in June 2024.
