





The event of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2023 was held at the Ministry of Information in Nay Pyi Taw in the afternoon on 23rd October.
The event was attended by the Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, permanent Secretary U Myo Myint Maung, departmental officials, staff members and the basic eduction high schools’ teachers and students from Pubbathiri and Zayyarthiri Townships.
At the event, the Union Minister for information U Maung Maung Ohn said, annually, the fourth week of October was designated as “Global Media and Information Literacy Week” by the UNESCO and organized it around the world and Myanmar participated in the event since 2018.
The purpose of organizing the event includes reviewing the improvement in Media and Information Literacy by all stakeholders, enhancement for accessibility of information and honoring for the development of Media and Information Literacy and it’s salient period for organize to promote the knowledge of the people around the world.
The theme for the “2023 Global Media and Information Literacy Week” is “Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces; A Collective Global Agenda”. The activities on the event will be carried out from October 23rd to 25th.
During the event, the educational talk, seminars and study tour will be provided for in-service personnel, youth, teachers and basic education students to improve in Media and Information Literacy.
By carrying out those activities, the teaches who are teaching and training the personnel and youth to be good human resources to enable to distinguish between fake news and disinformation and true news and tackle the hate speech spreading on the social network and implement hoping for the peaceful society.
Next, the video clip on educating internet usage for youth was screened. Then, the participants were introduced with the teachers who will include in the roundtable discussion and the Union Minister presented certificate of honor.
Next, the Union Minister participated in the question-and-answer section on the information and General knowledge together with the students, awarded memorable gifts to the prize winners and observed the displayed books, documents, journals and newspapers.
In the roundtable discussion section, the Deputy Director Daw Myat Kyay Mon from the Department of Media Development performed as Moderator and Writer Daw Thet Thet Nwe (Thet Thet Nwe -Yangon University), Daw Wint Wint Aye (Advocate) and Writer Daw Khin Lay (Khin Lay-Union Territory) discussed regarding with disinformation, fabricated news and the social media platforms help spread the hate speech, good and bad consequences of social media and communication law.
The students raised queries on what they wanted to know and the speakers replied them. After giving a speech of conclusion by the Director General of the Department of Media Development Dr. Thita Tin, the students answered the General knowledge questions.
