In response to escalating global trade tensions, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for Southeast Asian nations to bolster intra-regional trade and diversify their economic partnerships.

This initiative aims to mitigate potential adverse effects from recent U.S. tariff announcements under President Donald Trump. As the 2025 ASEAN chair, Malaysia is actively facilitating dialogue among member countries to present a unified stance on the proposed U.S. tariffs.

Plans are underway for a summit with the United States to express concerns and seek resolutions that do not disproportionately impact ASEAN economies. Prime Minister Anwar emphasizes the importance of expanding trade networks beyond traditional partners.
