Macron meets current president Barzani, former leader in Irbil

French President Emmanuel Macron met with Iraqi Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani in Irbil on Sunday. After spending the morning in Mosul, Macron headed to Irbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, where he had lunch with Barzani and his brother Masoud Barzani, the region's former president.

The French leader offered his condolences to the widow of Hujam Surchi, a fighter killed by the Islamic State group, and posed for a photo with soldiers. Macron arrived in Baghdad on early Saturday where he took part in a conference attended by officials from around the Middle East aimed at easing Mideast tensions and underscored Iraq's new role as mediator.
