The Macau Deaf Association hopes the government can put forward new legislation to enhance Macau’s barrier-free environment.A representative from the association highlighted the difficulties faced by the hearing impaired in their daily lives.

The Director of the Macau Deaf Association said her group has around 800 deaf or hard-of-hearing persons in Macau who use sign language, and that it follows up on an average of 10 cases a year of newborns who may face hearing difficulties.

Earlier this month, several public departments were criticised for their work on the 10-year rehabilitation services plan in a report published by the Commission of Audit. The report cited the departments’ inadequacy in constructing barrier-free facilities.
