Los Angeles city councilmembers are introducing legislation to make the nation's second largest city a sanctuary city for migrants.
Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez, Nithya Raman and Hugo Soto-Martinez held a press conference, along with immigrant rights' advocates announcing legislation "to direct the city to report back" on an ordinance that would establish L.A. as a "sanctuary city."
KABC television reports that the ordinance would also prohibit any city resources, property or personnel from being used for any federal immigration enforcement. Hugo Soto-Martinez, Los Angeles City Council Member said "It's not a city sanctuary should be a sanctuary city, a city of Los Angeles that protects immigrants, that welcomes immigrants, that say you are the lifeblood of the city, and that we embrace you, that we love you.
You are part of our community and we will do everything so that you can live in the city and thrive. L.A. is home to more than 1.3 million immigrants, according to the city”. However, a significant amount of them live in fear of being detained and deported by federal authorities.
