Long lines and tourists unable to enter Machu Picchu

Peruvian authorities announced Wednesday that tickets to enter Machu Picchu are sold out until August 19th.
Hundreds of tourists blocked the train tracks close to Machu Picchu to protest the fact they cannot enter Machu Picchu since the beginning of the week due to overbooking.
The city has a maximum capacity of 4,044 people per day but tour businesses entice travellers to go by train and purchase tickets upon arrival.
The Minister of Culture warned tourists of possible disinformation campaigns aimed at taking people's money in exchange for fake tickets.
There has been a steady increase in visitors to the UNESCO site since it reopened in October 2020.
