Clean-up operations resume in Derna, on Libya's Mediterranean coast, where a flash flood caused massive damage, costing thousands of lives and leaving countless others missing. Aid groups warned of growing risk posed by the spread of disease that could compound the humanitarian crisis, as hopes dwindled of finding more survivors days after deadly flooding.

The flash floods submerged the port city of Derna after two upstream dams burst under the pressure of torrential rains triggered by the hurricane-strength storm. The United Nations launched an appeal for more than $71 million to assist hundreds of thousands in need.
