Workshop on Library Period of Let’s Read Project kicked off at Myanmar Book Center in Yangon on Monday.
This is the 3rd time workshop of Let’s Read Project for the librarians from Myanmar Library Association, Community Librarians, IPRD Librarians, Township Education Officers from Yangon, Mandalay and Maubin township.
It aims to promote the reading habits among the children by setting library period during the school hours.
Executive Director, Myanmar Book Aid & Preservation Foundation, Dr. Thant Thaw Kaung said “Our project mainly targets to promote the role of library and reading habits among the children nationwide. As a pilot area, we selected the schools from Yangon, Mandalay and Maubin, where the library period has already set up so we invited the librarians from those areas to train them concerning with the reading aloud, shared reading, pairing and independent reading for the children.”
The workshop was collaborated by “Room to Read” together with Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation (MBAPF), Ministry of Education, and Myanmar Library Association.
Associate Director, Southeast Asia Literary Program (Room to Read), David Strawbridge “this workshop is about the Library Period looking at the activity we can do in the library period so reading with children, how to read with children for enjoyment focuses very much on enjoyment and habit of reading and we have four main activities one is reading aloud, shared reading, independent reading, pair reading. So in the library period, the teachers will do one of those activities in each library period that's the main focus….I think the library period is the key one of the key ways to get children to enjoy reading...”
All the participants are hoping to get a lot of knowledge on the role of library, setting the library period as well as to promote the reading habits among the children.
Teacher, BEMS (9 ) (Insein Tsp.), Moe Ma Ma said “I attend this workshop representing our school which includes in the pilot project. During the workshop, we’ve to discuss the library period. I do believe that I will get a lot of knowledge on setting the library period and managing the library in our school. I also hope to promote the reading habits among the children by setting the library period in the schools.”
The workshop will be held for four days till Thursday.
