The cast of Kenyan love story "Rafiki" attended the film's premiere in Cannes yesterday. It is the first Kenyan film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival. The film tells the story of two teenage girls who fall in love on a Nairobi housing estate.
It has fallen foul of colonial-era laws banning gay sex. According to censors it undermines Kenyan family values. "Rafiki" means "friend" in KiSwahili. The story is adapted from an award-winning short story "Jambula Tree".
