Legal Translation Commission: Commission’s 15th meeting held

The 15th meeting of the Legal Translation Commission, the working committee, and the sub-working groups was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Legal Affairs on 16th December.

The meeting was attended by the Union Minister for Legal Affairs, Union Attorney in her capacity as the Chairperson of the Commission, 11 outside legal experts who are members of the Committee in person and 4 members via video conference.During the meeting, Commission Chairperson Dr. Thida Oo mentioned that this is the 8th meeting held during her tenure as the Chairperson of the Commission.

She also highlighted that during this period, the Commission had successfully translated and approved 21 laws into Myanmar, and six volumes of law translation books (No. 9 to 14) were printed and published. She noted that there are currently 81 laws, originally written in English during the colonial era, which are still under the responsibility of the Commission for translation.

In accordance with Section 12 of the Legal Translation Commission Law, the translations into Myanmar of these laws will carry the same authority as the original texts. If any discrepancies are found between the translations and the original texts, the original text will be confirmed.

Additionally, Dr. Thida Oo mentioned that the Myanmar Stamp Act will soon be published as Book No. 15.The meeting covers discussions on the translation and approval of six laws: The Bills of Lading Act, The District Cesses Act, The Religious Societies Act, The Obstructions in Fairways Act, The Myanmar Territorial Force Act, and The Evidence Act.

The Commission emphasized the importance of collective discussions to ensure the translations are accurate and correct.The meeting was attended by members of the Legal Translation Commission, the working committee, and the sub-working groups, and it is expected to continue for two days.
