At least eight people missing in Peru after mudslides hit highway

13 March 2019

At least eight people are missing after the vehicles they were travelling in were hit by mudslides along a highway in central Peru, local media reported on Wednesday. The highway connecting Huanuco and Tingo Maria was closed off after rocks and mud fell on top of stretches of it. Passenger buses and vehicles were stranded for hours.

Dozens of homes in the town of Ayacucho were flooded with residents losing all their belongings. Heavy machinery has been sent to the area to clean-up. More than 12 hours of torrential rains have caused severe flooding in large swaths of the South American country with mudslides downing bridges and blocking roadways.
