U.S. authorities said on Sunday that three people were killed when an Amtrak train derailed in north-central Montana.

The train was running between Seattle and Chicago. The derailment occurred on Saturday afternoon. The emergency services coordinator for Liberty County Montana said an investigation is underway and five people with injuries remained at a nearby hospital.

The Empire Builder train derailed about 4 p.m. near Joplin, south of the Canadian border. Amtrak said the train had about 141 passengers and 16 crew members onboard.
