Launching Ceremony: Wind disaster prevention management plan

The launching ceremony of the wind disaster prevention management plan was conducted at the hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on January 23rd. Union Minister Dr. Soe Win attended the event and made a speech, saying that most of the global countries face climate change which causes natural disasters.

As pre-summer season is closer in Myanmar, strong winds, thunder, hail, and lightening often occur, and among them, damages caused by strong winds are the most. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology issues weather warnings based on wind speed, indicating the potential for strong winds and storms.

From 2016-2017 to 2023-2024 Fiscal Year, over 237,000 houses from 15 regions and states were affected due to the strong wind. To mitigate damages caused by strong wind, most severe affected regions are selected and mitigation measures to prevent and minimize wind damage have been conducted annually starting 2016-2017 Fiscal Year.

During 2023-2024 Fiscal Year, over 75,000 houses from 15 regions and states were renovated with over 2.7 billion kyats. The Union Minister called for collaborative efforts of all local to participate in reducing the damages caused by natural disasters.

Attendees from respective regions and state reported their current working processes for wind disaster prevention management plan. In 2024-2025 Fiscal Year, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement will conduct preparation works for over 11,000 households from 7 regions and states with the use of 752.4 million kyats budget allotment.
