Lanterns flood the night sky in Taiwan

25 September 2018

Locals and foreign visitors gathered to celebrate the mid-autumn festival in Taiwan, on Monday. The mountainous village has a long history of releasing flying lanterns, which were first used as a means of communication between villagers and later were sent as wishes for the coming year. Environment protection groups have criticized sky lantern events in the past for generating too much plastic waste in the mountains.

According to the organisers, measures have been taken to clean up and recycle the trash. This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the sky lantern festival.
