Kayin National Day: Celebration Held In Yangon

11 February 2019

Kayin nationals in Yangon gathered at Judson Hall on Monday to celebrate the 71st Kayin National Day.

On February 11, 1948, over 400,000 Kayin nationals from across the country protested to demand equal rights and self-determination. The day was marked as the Kayin National day in 1953. This is the 4th celebration in Yangon Region.

Member, Organizing Committee, Naw Ohn Hla said “This is to remember how much united the Kayin nationals were in 1948. They had to arm for several reasons then. The young generation does not know about it. That’s why, we held this celebration in Yangon.”

The celebration included the redemonstration of the 1948 protests and the Kayin nationals showed their spirit and unity on the day.

Sa Kyaw Lin Thu said “As a Kayin young man, I want all the Kayin young men to attend Kayin National Day event and listen. I think every Kayin national should participate in the efforts for racial or religious matters.”

The 71st Kayin National Day was also celebrated at the same time in Hinthada, Pantanaw, Nyaung Done and Myaung Mya townships.
