A continuing drought in Italy has seen famous Lake Garda continue to shrink and is now at 25% of its water capacity. A recent report from Italy's Po river basin authority showed that rivers in northern Italy are already as low as in the summer 2022 and flow rates are hitting their lowest levels in 20 years.

The winter season's low rainfall and insufficient snow accumulation are to blame. Low water levels could jeopardise irrigation in the summer and are already causing the forced shutdown of several hydroelectric plants.
