Italian rescuers search sea for landslide missing

Teams of Coast Guard divers and rescuers were searching for missing people in the waters in front of Casamicciola, on the Italian island of Ischia on Sunday, following an enormous landslide triggered by exceptional rainfall.

Rainfall cause a mass of mud and debris hurtling down a mountainside toward Casamicciola port, collapsing buildings and sweeping vehicles into the sea.

One body was recovered on Saturday and two families with children remained among the 11 missing in the port town, feared buried under mud and debris that firefighters said was six meters deep in some places.

Over 160 people have been displaced from their homes.The island received nearly five inches of rain in six hours, the heaviest rainfall in 20 years, according to officials.Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni convened a Cabinet meeting for later on Sunday to declare a state of emergency on the island.
