Introduction Ceremony: Road Map for promoting beans/pulses value chain

A ceremony to introduce a Road Map for promoting Myanmar’s beans and pulses value chain was held in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday. During the ceremony, the Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung said that the Road Map for promoting Myanmar’s beans and pulses value chain is the main process of Agriculture Transformation and Market Integration ATMI-ASEAN project.

And it is a result of the agricultural sector changes and market cooperation project jointly implemented by experts from the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and local experts. The Union Minister added that promoting Myanmar’s beans and pulses value chain Road Map could improve social-economic life of local farmers, to develop the agriculture sector in order to connect the cultivation and production of beans and pulses as well as the market.

The Union Minister stressed that all need to be carried out the promotion activities as the Road Map. Then, the Director of SEARCA Dr. Glenn B. Gregorio discussed on the Road Map for promoting of Myanmar’s beans and pulses value chain and the Director General of Planning Department briefed the related matters of the Road Map.

At the ceremony, the Union Minister together with Deputy Minister and the Director General presented the Road Map to the Director of SEARCA and other responsible officials. Myanmar is one of the largest producers and exporters of pulses in the world with a total of 3.95 million acres of cultivation and beans and pulses are the most exporting crops among the agricultural products. In 2020-2021, Myanammr earned about 1.57  billion US dollars which is about 38 percent of foreign exports from the bean export.

The Road Map is aimed to improve the income and living standard of local farmers, to develop the socio-economic lives of the locals and to become high quality beans and pulses producers while expanding to foreign market.
