Intellectual Property Rights: Central Committee on IP held Meeting 1/2023

Central Committee on Rights of Intellectual Property held a Meeting 1/2023 at the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw on 21st June with the attendance of Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Defence General Mya TunOo.

Also present at the meeting were Union Minister for Commerce U Aung NaingOo, Deputy Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Directors-General and officials. First, Chairman of the Central Committee General Mya TunOo said that this meeting is the first one to be held for 2023-2024 FY.

Myanmar is a member country of World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and it is needed to establish an intellectual property system that is in line with the international standards. For that requirement, 4 intellectual property laws such as the Trademark Copyright Law, the Industrial Design Copyright Law, the Invention Copyright Law and the Literary and Artistic Copyright Law were enacted in 2019.

Being a member of the WTO and the WIPO, Myanmar needs to comply with the trade treaty related to intellectual property and join the cooperation in IP among Southeast Asian countries. He urged the responsible ministries, relevant departments and non-governmental organizations to cooperate in implementing a system protecting the intellectual property rights which can benefit in the implementation of the economic objectives of the State.

After that, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee Union Minister U Aung NaingOo clarified on the respective matters implemented by the Ministry. Next, Secretary of the Central Committee Deputy Minister U Nyunt Aung made explanations about the completed implementation regarding the decisions made at the Central Committee Meeting 2/2022.

Then, the joint-secretary of the Central Committee Director General Dr. Moe MoeThwe read out the orders regarding the Intellectual Property rights. The attendees also made discussions according to the respective sectors. Afterwards, the draft decision of the Central Committee Meeting 1/2023 was approved. The meeting came to an end after the closing speech by the Chairman of the Central Committee.
