Int’l Days of Nurses and Midwife: MoH UM gave an opening speech at the event

Union Minister for Health attended a commemoration of “International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day” observed at Nursing and Midwife Training School (Nay Pyi Taw) in the morning on 10th of May.

In his opening speech, the Union Minister for Health Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win said that on the acknowledgment of the contributions of the nurses and mid-wives, the 12th of May which is a birth day of Florence Nightingale was designated as International Nurses’ Day by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) as of 1974 and 5th of May is specified as International Mid-wives’ Day by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) as of 1991 and the commemorations have been observed yearly with the relevant themes aiming at enhancing the capacities of nurses and mid-wives.

The theme for 2024 International Mid-Wives’ Day is “Midwives: A vital Climate Solution” and the theme of International Nurses’ Day is “Our Nurses. Our Future. The Economy Power of Care”. The Nurses and Mid-Wives are urged to put effort by emulating the good examples acknowledged not only at home but also at the abroad.

During the tenure of State Administration Council, Florence Nightingale Medal Award Winners Major Daw Khin Ohn Mya, Daw M Yaw Nam (Assistant Director – Retired), Daw Thein Yi (Midwife-Retired) and U Sa Naing Naing Tun (Senior Nurse) were awarded the Wunna Kyaw Htin Title and 6 nurse and midwives who lose the life and sustained wounds were awarded with Ye Bala Medal.

At the second part of the commemoration, the sustainable nursing and midwifery education talk regarding with the International Mid-Wives’ Day and International Nurses’ Day were conducted by the chairperson of Myanmar Nurse and Midwife Council and Senior officials, Florence Nightingale Medal Award Winner Wunna Kyaw Htin U Sa Naing Naing Tun and midwife Daw San San Myint shared their performance and experiences.
