Under the theme "Promoting the Sustainable Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the Future," the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities commemoration ceremony was held in the Township Hall of Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region on Tuesday.
At the event, Tanintharyi Region Chief Minister U Myat Ko stated that the International Day of Persons with Disabilitiesobserved annually on December 3rd, is celebrated worldwide to recognize the value and contributions of persons with disabilities within society. Similarly, Myanmar observes this day with international-standard events, including regional-level ceremonies like today’s. He emphasized that Myanmar had signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on December 7, 2011, as part of its commitment to reducing inequalities faced by persons with disabilities and ensuring their full inclusion in society.The Chief Minister also urged stakeholders to incorporate a barrier-free environment into all sectors as part of the country's development process, promoting the inclusion and leadership of persons with disabilities to enhance their quality of life and ensure their participation in all aspects of society.
Following this, a video message from the UN Secretary-General and a musical performance by persons with disabilities were presented. Chief Minister U Myat Ko observed and encouraged these performances before presenting awards to the winners of the high school essay competition.
Additionally, Chief Justice of Region High Court presented awards to the middle school essay competition winners. Social Affairs Minister also awarded a prize of 100,000 Kyats to a performance group comprising persons with disabilities.
