Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday heard report on status of upgrading airports in Rakhine State.

At the Sittwe Airport, Union Minister for Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San reported on a brief history and information about the airports in Sittwe, Kyaukphyu and Thandwe townships, capacity of airport runways, plan to carry out the construction and upgrading of runways and airports and implementation of the instructions of the Chairman of the State Administration Council.

In his response, the Senior General stressed that the runways need to be planned and calculated systematically for the long term. Construction of aircraft parking areas also needs to be done properly. As Kyauk Phyu Deep Sea Port has potential to develop, it is necessary to plan for the extension of the runway in Kyaukphyu Airport as large cargo planes can enter.

Regarding the Sittwe Airport, expanding the runway and upgrading the airport needs to meet the standard in which aircrafts such as A-320 and B-737 will be able to land. Also, due to the large influx of domestic and foreign travelers, it is necessary to upgrade the Thandwe Airport until jet planes can land.

And, the Senior General inspected the conditions that would enable the Sittwe Airport to be upgraded and gave necessary instructions. On the same day, the Senior General inspected the Sittwe Station.
