Inspection Team of MNHRC: Inspection team inspected Pathein Prison, PL and CDC

The inspection team, led by U Kyaw Myint, member of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, conducted an inspection of the Police Lock-up and Court Detention Center on 19th February and inspected Pathein Prison and Settawyar Home for the Aged, on 20 February in Pathein Township, Ayeyarwaddy Region in accordance with Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law and also inspected MNHRC Branch Office (Pathein) on 21st February.

The inspection team inspected Pathein police lock-up and court detention center that the conditions of Remand period of detainees, families visit, food supply and water sanitation system of the detention centers.

The inspection team inspected the Pathein prison according to MNHRC law and procedures whether the prisoners and detainees enjoy the fundamental rights, including appropriate food supply, access to healthcare and provision of adequate purified water and cleanliness of police lock-up and court detention center. The inspection team inquired the prisoners in order to ensure that whether their personal items and items sent by families can get, family visits and whether there were human rights violations and torture cases in the prison and detention centers. The inspection team also privately interviewed the prisoners who wish to meet with the team freely and privately and also inspected the dormitories, clinic, library, kitchen, food storage, water purifier, water sanitation system of the prison.

Then, the inspection team inspected the Settawyar Home for the Aged in accordance with the MNHRC Law and procedures whether the old aged persons can get fundamental human rights including healthcare services, food supply, provision of purified drinking water, right to freedom of religion, adequate dormitories and arrangements for leisure.

MNHRC will send recommendations to the relevant departments for necessary action based on the findings during inspection.
