The Chairman of the State Administration Council, Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, along with Council Joint Secretary, General Ye Win Oo, and members, visited the 300-bed Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital in the evening on April 8 to inspect the damage caused by the recent Mandalay earthquake to the medical facilities and staff housing.
During the inspection, the SAC Chairman, Prime Minister and members toured the hospital's medical facilities, specialized treatment areas, staff housing, and surgical units. They observed the damage caused by the earthquake. The Union Minister for Health and other responsible officials provided detailed explanations about the damage and the actions being taken. In response to the reports, the SAC Chairman, Prime Minister, emphasized the need for systematic inspection and repair of buildings that can be fixed by construction specialists.
He also highlighted the importance of demolishing unsafe buildings and rebuilding them if repairs are not possible. It was noted that the buildings that collapsed during the earthquake had not been constructed according to the prescribed standards, which resulted in significant damage.
This was a crucial lesson to be learned. Furthermore, it was noted that responsible authorities must ensure systematic and strict enforcement of building standards in future construction projects. As a result of the extensive damage to the buildings at the 300-bed Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital, the hospital has temporarily relocated to the Zeyathiri Township 50-bed People’s Hospital, where medical services continue to be provided.
