Indonesia has raised the highest alert level after Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted Wednesday morning, sending an 8-kilometer-high ash column into the sky and prompting the temporary evacuation of nearby residents.

There was no immediate word of any casualties or damage but authorities warned residents and tourists to stay away from the volcano’s slopes as ash covered surrounding areas, disrupting daily life and raising concerns about air travel in the region.
