Indigenous women compete in Bolivia bicycle race

Indigenous women raced through the streets of Bolivia's youngest city, El Alto, on Sunday.

More than 40 cholitas took to their bikes, wearing the classic, multi-layered Andean skirt, called the pollera.The women, ranging in ages from 18 to 45, biked for seven kilometers through the city's streets.

The race was part of festivities celebrating the 38th anniversary of El Alto.The city is one of the highest populated areas in the world, lying at an altitude of 4,150 metres above sea level.The Indigenous Aymara and Quechua women are famous for wearing traditional billowing skirts, bowler hats and leather shoes.
