Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing attended the inauguration of country's second underpass on U Wisara Road, connecting the west entrance of the Shwedagon Pagoda and the People's Square in Dagon Township, Yangon on Monday.

Upon the arrival, the Prime Minister was welcomed by the Yangon Region Chief Minister and other concerned officials. Then, the Prime Minister and entourage heard the reports on the objectives and benefits of the newly constructed underpass by Mayor U Bo Htay.

Following the report, the Prime Minister and officials viewed a video clip showcasing the construction process. Then, the Prime Minister received the commemorative gift from Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, to mark the occasion.

The ceremony also included the presentation of commemorative gift to the engineers who contributed to the project's successful completion. After that, Chief Minister, the Commander, and the mayor jointly cut the ribbon to officially open the underpass.

The Prime Minister then activated the entrance to the underpass by pressing a ceremonial button and took a documentary photo with the attendees. He also presented cash rewards to the bugle corps and Pom Pom dance troupes for their participation in the inauguration.

After that, the Prime Minister and his entourage inspected construction photos of the underpass and tunnel and provided neccessary instructions based on officials' briefings. The newly opened underpass was constructed under the guidance of the SAC Chairman Prime Minister in October 2023, aimed at providing a safe and comfortable passage for pilgrims to Shwedagon Pagoda and People's Square.

The 461-foot-long tunnel, with a height of 11 feet and width of 23 feet, features 4 entrances, 4 escalators and 2 elevators for accessibility. It can accommodate up to 14,000 people per hour and will ease traffic on U Wisara Road. More than just an infrastructural development, the underpass stands as a symbol of Yangon's ongoing modernization and progress.
