At least five people were killed on Thursday when a fire engulfed a hotel in the capital of Costa Rica, a prime Caribbean tourist destination, rescue workers said.

The fire broke out at dawn on the third floor of the Oriente hotel in central San Jose, the fire service wrote on social media. An elderly couple was found dead in bed, locked in embrace, the fire service said, adding that three other people were found dead nearby. The cause of the blaze was under investigation. The fire service said the hotel's emergency exit was "blocked by metal wires."
