Communities surrounding Guatemala’s Fuego volcano were evacuated overnight as renewed volcanic activity sent gas and ash into the air, prompting emergency measures.

Authorities confirmed the evacuation of more than 500 residents, who were transported to shelters in Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa. The eruption triggered alarms in several villages, prompting an organized departure by bus amid fears of escalating activity. Residents reported intense rumbling and ashfall, drawing comparisons to the deadly 2018 eruption.

The National Institute for Seismology continues to monitor Fuego, one of Central America’s most active volcanoes. Ash emissions have reached surrounding areas, though no injuries or fatalities have been reported. Authorities remain on high alert as volcanic conditions persist.
