Protesters gathered across Argentina on Wednesday, marching and blocking highways throughout the country.
Demonstrators were demanding there be a universal basic income provided for unemployed workers amid increasing inflation and economic unrest in the South American country. Social organizations also participated and helped organize the nationwide protest. Dozens of roads on the outskirts of Buenos Aires and several provinces of the country were blocked by a protest led by the Union of Popular Economy Workers, whose affinity for the government of Alberto Fernandez has cratered in recent months due to low wages.
Poverty in Argentina affects 37.3% of the population of 47 million people, according to figures from the second half of 2021, although analysts believe that it has increased due to inflation.
