Humpback whales 'reoccupy' Rio

Rio de Janeiro has become an area of "reoccupation" for humpback whales, said a hopeful conservation coordinator from a boat off the Brazilian coast where a group of researchers is observing the animal's behavior.

At the height of the whale-watching season, the humpback population is estimated to be around 30,000, thanks to the whaling ban. Despite these efforts, the giant mammal is still threatened by illegal fishing, heavy shipping traffic and water pollution.
