Fifty-thousand people marched over Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday in what was called the Pride march to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and to demand more global equality. The four kilometre long march was part of the Sydney WorldPride festival which lasted 17 days and ends on Sunday night.
The festival itself takes place every two or three years and was created in 1997 to bring support and more global awareness to the the issues the LGBTQIA+ community faces. The first WorldPride took place in 2000 in Rome.
The march and the WorldPride festival also celebrated a number of anniversaries close to the heart of the LGBTQIA+ community including the 45th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the 5th anniversary of marriage equality in Australia. The next WorldPride will take place in 2025 in Washington DC.
